What is author's purpose?
The reason an author writes something.

What are facts?
Things known for certain to have happened; things known for certain to be true; things known for certain to exist. These are provable or verifiable statements.

What are context clues?
Hints that an author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word.

What is except?
Which is the appropriate word?
Everybody showed up for the party accept/except Carlos. |
What is read more?
What is read widely? What is pay attention to new words you encounter? [Will accept any 2]
Two things you can do to build your vocabulary.

What is author's tone?
An author's attitude or opinion toward a topic is revealed by this.

What is validity?
The quality of being factually or logically sound. The strength of one’s argument.

What is definition or synonym?
The type of context clue used here:
Night is the time when many animals forage, or search, for food. |

Which is the appropriate word?
Which one is your/you're hat? |
What is time?
You should take as much of this as you need to avoid making careless mistakes during the Reading Comprehension test.

What are assumptions?
Beliefs the author must hold in order to have written something in the way that s/he has written it.
|
What are logical fallacies?
Invalid arguments usually contain these. Examples include circular reasoning, faulty cause and effect, and hasty generalizations.

What is example or illustration?
The type of context clue used here:
Joan loves to buy exotic foods: vegetables and herbs from China, spices from India, olives from Greece, and cheeses from France. |

What is 1) what we know (our background knowledge and/or prior experiences) and 2) what the text says (text evidence)?
Inferring from text requires us to draw conclusions based on these two things.

What is bias?
An author's prejudice or slant on an issue or topic.

What are opinions?
Things believed to have happened; things believed to be true; things believed to exist. These are statements of belief, feeling, or judgment.

What is contrast?

We thought that the mother would be very distraught at hearing of her husband's accident; however, she took the news quite calmly. |

Which is the appropriate word?
We won't know the affect/effect of the medication until later. |
What is monitoring comprehension?
The process of paying attention to whether or not you are understanding what you are reading.

What are word choice (language) and details?
Two mechanisms through which authors reveal tone.
|
What is irrelevant?
Sentences containing facts, opinions, or examples that have little or no connection to the main idea are considered to be this.

Because there was so little precipitation this year, the crops dried up and died. |
