What is surfing?
Duke Kahanamoku, ana The Big Kahuna, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1890. Kahanamoku was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming and was an alternate for the U.S. water polo team at the 1932 Olympics. Following his trail-blazing Olympic career, he traveled internationally to give swimming exhibitions and popularized this sport.

He won the 2008 Summer Olympics gold in the decathlon. He also previously won a silver medal in the decathlon in the 2004 Summer Olympics. He was dubbed the "World's Greatest Athlete" for the 2008 win with a 240-point margin between him and the next competitor. He is Afro-Asian with his mother being Japanese and his father being black.

Julie Chu, who is Chinese & Puerto Rican American, is the first Asian-American female to compete for the United States in the Winter Olympics for a sport other than figure skating. She took home three silver medals and one bronze medal from five Olympics playing in this team sport. She was chosen by fellow team USA to be the flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Amy Yuen Yee Chow of Shanghainese and Cantonese decent, competed in 1996 and 2000 and is best known for being a member of this winning team, which won the United States' first team gold medal in Olympic gymnastics in 1996. She is also the first Asian-American woman to win an Olympic medal in gymnastics.

Maia and Alex Shibutani are two-time Olympic Bronze Medalists, three-time World Medalists, Four Continents Champions, and two-time U.S. National Champions. At the 2018 Winter Olympics, the siblings became the first Asian Americans to win an Olympic gold metal in this event.
