Describe the War on Drugs and how it has impacted (and continues to impact) the black community today.
The War on Drugs was established by the Nixon Administration in the early 70s. The Nixon administration wanted to associate the antiwar hippies with marijuana and black people with heroin and crack. By criminalizing drugs our government was able to justify militarizing police forces nationwide. As a result of this, black communities were left in disarray and chaos as black men began to be arrested as increasingly high rates. The War on drugs is said to be the direct cause of Mass Incarceration, racial profiling and violent police brutality, and higher rates of poverty among African Americans.
