I think they have to be pretty dumb to cook spam in the hallway. If they were to cook it in a room they could easily put out the fire and the hotel would still be standing.
The book mentions that someone that was living in the same rundown hotel as Wab managed to burn down the entire hotel trying to cook spam in the hallway.

I think Miig's kidnappers didn't want his bone marrow. I believe they just wanted to scare him off so he would not come back to that area.

I do think they are friendly because we are nearing the end of the book so the author would introduce new allies to help them take over the recruiters.

I think they use vans because it is easier to transport the First Nations to the LAB.
