What is evoking?
It is contrasted from traditional assessment, planning, and prescription performed by an expert on or to the client. In MI, the client and the staff member are co-experts. They client is the expert on him or herself, what and why he or she wants to or needs to change. The staff is the expert on evoking this intrinsic motivation from the client. In more traditional approaches, the staff person provides the diagnosis and the solution but is also led to believe they must install motivation by telling the client why they should change. When staff make all the arguments for change, clients present arguments for why not the change- people don’t like being told what to do
The heart of MI- It is the process of calling forth the clients reason for change and also the clients idea on how change might occur.

What is engagement? You start with engagement or you don’t start at all. Incorporate the Spirit of MI (PACE) and specifically non-judgmental attitude, total attention to person,, and genuine empathy.
