What is a ileostomy?
Ileum is surgically brought to the surface through an opening in the right side of abdomen.

What is a colostomy?
Opening in large bowel created by bringing a section of the large intestine out to the abdomen and presenting a stoma

What is risk for bowel incontinence?
Unpredictable bowel elimination pattern

What is risk for impaired skin integrity?
Not intact peristomal skin related to fecal material and adhesives

What structures are involved in permanent ileostomy?
Entire colon, rectum, anus removal or bypassing these structures

What is the most common causes for a colostomy?
Dx of cancerous lesion, ulcerative inflammatory process, multiple polyposis, traumatic injury to bowel.

What is risk for diarrhea or constipation?
Changes in bowel motility

What is risk for infection?
Fecal contamination of wound

What structures are involved in a temporary ileostomy?
Removing all or a portion of the colon, but rectum/anus remains intact.

What is a single barrel colostomy?
Single stoma opening through with fecal matter pass.

What is post-operative assessment?
Assessment of vital signs, checking dressings, monitoring NG tubes and IV infusions.

What is bowel incontinence?
Loss of sphincter control and change in intestinal motility

What is the most common cause for ileostomy?
Dx of Inflammatory bowel disease and cancer

What is a double barrel colostomy?
Contains both proximal and distal stoma's. Proximal expel's fecal matter, distal does not pass feces.

What is normal characteristics of a stoma?
Pink-reddish moist stoma

What is risk for deficient fluid volume?
Decreased appetite, vomiting, increased loss of fluids and electrolytes

What is effluent?
Discharged fecal matter/liquid feces.

What is a loop colostomy?
Lifting a loop of bowel through opening in upper abdomen supported in place by plastic rod or bridge.

What is characteristics of an unhealthy stoma?
Dusky blue/black. Tight/narrow. Dull, dry and excessive bleeding in stoma.

Disturbed body image and altered bowel function
