 Most of these issues have been excluded from the political dialogue because they cannot be adequately addressed within the current mode of thinking. Our present world view is based on a perception of reality that has dominated our society for the past 300 years and that has become institutionalized and vested with power, but that is now incapable of conceiving new solutions. The more we study the major problems of our time, the more we come to realize that they cannot be understood in isolation. They are systemic problems - interconnected and interdependent. Stabilizing world population will be possible only when poverty is reduced worldwide. The extinction of animals and plant species on a massive scale will continue as long as the Third World is burdened by massive debts. Only if we stop the international arms race will we have the resources to prevent the destruction of both the environment and human life - the flooding of coastal cities caused by global warming, large-scale loss of cropland with ensuing malnutrition and famine, and so on. Ultimately, all these problems are facets of one single crisis, which is essentially a crisis of perception. We are at the beginning of a change of world view as radical as the Copernican Revolution - a shift from a mechanistic to a holistic and ecological view, from a value system based on domination to one based on partnership.
What is the crisis of perception?
