Makenna is with Ines in the aviary they talk how the birds get to the ranch. Either they are taken by MINAE or people cant look after them anymore. They talk about how she misses her friends and she starts to cry. Ines comforts her. Makenna's job becomes to look after a baby bird who has a hurt wing and leg. She names the bird Mimi after her mom. Then Juan Carlos comes (Ines' boyfriend) and is very rude and grabs Ines

Dr. Parker and Makenna go for a walk in the Jungle. They talk about Juan Carlos. Dr. Parker sees a rope in a tree and gets angry because people use ropes to look for bird eggs and steel them. He tries to call MINAE but cant get single they walk a little and he calls them. Makenna sees a red motorcycle like Juan Carlos'.

Makenna and Ines cut mangos and other fruit for the birds. She did not have tropical fruit in Michigan. Cecilio ate some of the mangos and then Ines was mad, but they were joking. Cecilio said he needed to leave to go to his moms house for her birthday. Family is really important in Costa Rica. They need a guard because there are bad people. Cecilio's dogs will help guard the birds. The aviary was large and the birds flew had great colors and feathers.

Dr. Parker drives a van with Makenna, Ines, and other people from the ranch to Curu. They stop to eat at a soda (Costa Rican restaurant). Makenna eats casado which has meat, rice, frijoles, fried bananas, and she drank horchata, she loved the dish. Ines and Makenna talk. She says that she is 43 and Juan Carlos is 32 years old. Makenna does not like Juan Carlos.

Margarita makes breakfast for Makenna; it is rice and beans. Makenna thinks its weird to have gallo pinto in the morning. Margarita's husband and Ines' dad was Manuel, but he died in a car accident; Ines never met him. She married Ricardo when Ines was 2 years old and he became her father. Makenna can't imagine calling someone else mom. Ines is 43, skinny, long hair, and a big nose.

Makenna talks to her father about the robbery. He says the dogs didt bark. Ines comes through the door and invites them if they want to go to Curu in Nicoya to see a place to let free the birds. They go but the dad get a red face. Makenna rembers Juan carlos saying something about Nicoya on the phone.

There are lots of earthquakes and peace. There are great jungles. 96% people can read. There is no dictator. Cecilio drives them to the ranch. She now lives in a tiny house with a bedroom, small bathroom, living room.

She hears Juan Carlos on the phone. Juan Carlos is happy and smiling on the phone, she thinks he is handsome. She also thinks that he has another girlfriend. The window is broken in the baby bird hose. And everything is disorganized. It is really quite which is weird. Mimi is under the desk and is shaking. She goes to Ines who is crying because Juan Carlos has work problems. She says the birds disappeared. Cecilio comes and says that the birds were worth a lot of money. Ines says to call MINAE.

Makenna is 15 years old on a plane heading to San Jose with her dad. Dr. Parker is an ecologist. Her mom died in a car accident when she was 12. She has a sister in college named Alex. She is sad because her friends are back in Michigan and her horse, Bender. Lastly, she goes to school in September.

Makenna goes to the big house for breakfast. She talks to Ricardo. Ricardo tells her more about the ranch, and how people just rob the birds because money is the only important thing to them. They take eggs and babies from the jungle. Families and generations of people rob the birds. MINAE guards the birds and people dont steel them. They arrest people that try and then give the birds to the ranch. The birds stay their for 3 months then are released.
