What is The Berlin Airlift
In June 1948, the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin, and Western Allies such as the United States delivered food and supplies by air. This impacted the United States because it was a tremendous victory that they achieved without fighting by foiling the plan that the Soviets had created to hold West Berlin hostage. The barrier was eventually lifted in May 1949.

President of the U.S. from 1945-1953. Nobody thought he would win the election, but he did. In his second term, he attempted to initiate a series of changes called The Fair Deal. The changes from this that went through congress greatly impacted the economy.

Who is William Levitt
Purchased several acres of farmland on Long Island, NY in the 50s the built Levittown. Used the assembly line to make all of the houses and buildings in Levittown. Each town consisted of schools, parks, churches, shopping centers, and houses. After finishing Levittown, William Levitt continued to build many more towns along the Northeast.

Who is Senator Joseph McCarthy
A chairman on the Senate's Committee on Government Operations from January 3, 1947- May 2, 1957 that made sentimental claims about communists in the US. Managed to ruin many careers, undermine worker morale, and make the United States look fearful in the eyes by his accusations, while still not uncovering very many communists. He especially targeted the US army and eventually his ideas, known as McCarthyism, were shut down.

What is Taft-Hartley Act
Curbed the power of organized labor. President could impose a “cooling off” period to prevent strikes. Made it illegal to require workers to join a union. Encourages states to pass “right-to-work” laws. Union membership remained high, the ability of unions to bargain on behalf of employees was largely unaffected.
