Synthetic Resources The Rock Cycle Resources Miscellaneous
100
True
True or False: Synthetic resources are made from natural resources.
100
1. Sedimentary

2. Igneous

3. Metamorphic
What are the three types of rocks?
100
Anything that comes from the Earth/nature.
What is a natural resource?
100
An extended structure is an atomic structure made up of a repeating pattern of atoms.
What is an extended structure?
200
A chemical reaction
What type of reaction do natural resources undergo to become a synthetic resource?
200
1. Heat from the center of the Earth (metamorphic and igneous)

2. Heat from the sun (sedimentary)
What are the two sources of energy for the processes that make the three types of rocks?
200
Unlimited and limited resources.
What is another name for a renewable and nonrenewable resource?
200
Intrusive igneous rocks cool down slowly. The longer it takes for the rock to cool, the larger the crystals become.
Which type of igneous rocks cool down slowly? How does the cooling time impact crystal size?
300
1. Natural resources are gathered.

2. Natural resources undergo a chemical reaction

3. Synthetic resources are made.
Describe how synthetic resources are made. (3 main steps)
300
A sedimentary rock
What type of rock would be found near the surface of the earth with observable layers and fossils in it?
300
A renewable resource is a resource that is created faster than it is used, meaning that humans can continue to use it over and over again.
What is a renewable resource?
300
True. When natural resources undergo chemical reactions, their atomic structures change to create a synthetic material which has a different function than the natural resources that went into it.
True or False: Changing the structure of a material affects its function
400
To serve a different function that is more useful than the function of the natural resources that go into them.
Why do humans create synthetic resources?
400
Extrusive igneous rocks are igneous rocks that cool on/above Earth's surface whereas intrusive igneous rocks are igneous rocks that cool below/under the Earth's surface
Explain the difference between extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks.
400
A nonrenewable resource is a resource that takes longer to be created than the time it takes to use that resource, meaning that once we use it up, we can no longer get any more of it.
What is a nonrenewable resource?
400
Rocks are broken down into small pieces through weathering. These sediments are transported to a new location through the process of erosion. When the sediments settle in their new location, deposition is occurring. As more sediments pile on top of one another they are compacted due to pressure. Finally, sediments are cemented together to form a sedimentary rock.
Describe how a sedimentary rock is created.
500
1. The arrangement of the atoms changes

2. Atoms are added
What are the two ways that a synthetic resource can be created? (at the atomic level)
500
Sedimentary-- Weathering, erosion, deposition, compaction and cementation

Igneous-- cooling, crystallization, and melting

Metamorphic-- deformation
Name the processes that are associated with creating each rock type.

Sedimentary has 5.

Igneous has 3.

Metamorphic has 1.

Metal ores are considered a non-renewable resource because they are made by Earth's natural process and take millions of years to be created. Once humans use up the metal ores we have on Earth, we will not be able to get any more for a long time.
Explain why metal ores are considered a nonrenewable resource.
500
In a chemical reaction, the reactants and the products have different properties. This is because of a rearrangement of atoms that occurs as the reaction takes place. The new arrangement of atoms gives the products completely different properties than those of the reactants. (Ex. the paper clip that went back to its shape)
Explain how a chemical reaction can effect the properties of the reactants and the products.
